Faced with the challenges experienced by people with disabilities in Canada and Quebec – also considering certain problems that were exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic – the federal Liberal government presented during the speech of the Throne in September 2020 measures to support them. The government has since embarked on a new allowance modeled on the Guaranteed Income Supplement for Seniors program. “The survey to find out the needs and the support for the support measures was necessary. We must act: remember that more than 40% of poor people in Canada are disabled, ”contextualizes Guillaume Parent, national director of the movement Le Handicap sans Poverty.
The brand new study by the Angus Reid Institute, in partnership with PLAN, which is released today , shows the enthusiasm for this measure. In fact, 92% of Quebecers give their support to the Canadian Allowance for the Autonomy of People with Disabilities while also having, among the Canadian provinces, the highest rate of support although on average, we are in favor of 89 %. This overwhelming support can be associated with this proportion of respondents who believe that the current support for people with disabilities is not enough (59%).
Many of the 800 people living with a disability surveyed say they are more burdened by “financial stress”, express less satisfaction with their personal life and have less hope for the future than people without disabilities.
If the program rolls out soon to meet the needs, we can hope to significantly reduce poverty for 2 million people with disabilities.as was the case with the Guaranteed Income Supplement for the elderly or even children from disadvantaged families who received the Canada Child Benefit. “Knowing that such a program is being considered by our government is stimulating for the future of people with disabilities here. With the Handicap Without Poverty team, we want to create a more inclusive and accessible Canada ”enthuses Luca” Lazylegz “Patuelli, co-chair of the initiative.
Disability Without Poverty
Disability Without Poverty is a popular movement by and for people with disabilities whose ultimate goal is to engage people with disabilities in the development of support measures, primarily the Canadian Disability Autonomy Benefit .
About the Survey
The Angus Reid Institute conducted an online survey from May 17 to 21, 2021 with a representative random sample of 2,103 Canadian adults who are Angus Reid Forum members.
For comparison purposes only, a national probability sample of this size would have a margin of error of +/- 2.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20. Discrepancies in or between totals are due to rounding.
