Everything you need to know about the Canada Disability Benefit

  Apply to receive the CDB

f you submit your application by June 30, you will receive your first monthly CDB payment on July 18. If, for any reason, you are unable to apply by June 30, there is no need to worry—a retroactive payment will still be possible.

Where to apply

You can apply on the Government of Canada website, by phone, or in person at a Service Canada office.

https://www.canada.ca/en/services/benefits/disability/canada-disability-benefit/

The application form will be available on this page starting June 20.

Who is eligible?
To be eligible for the CDB, you must:

  • be between 18 and 64 years old
  • have qualified for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
  • have filed your 2024 income tax return
  • meet the other eligibility criteria for the CDB (such as having an income below $23,000 for a single person, or a family income of $32,500 or less for a couple. The benefit is reduced by $0.25 for every dollar of income above this amount)

If you are likely eligible for the CDB (you qualify for the DTC and meet most of the criteria), you should receive a letter in June containing a unique application code. This code will give you access to a faster online or phone application process. Haven’t received a letter but think you’re eligible? You can still apply using the standard process.

Before applying, make sure you have the following information on hand:

  • Social insurance number (SIN)
  • Direct deposit information: Service Canada asks all future recipients to sign up for direct deposit because it is the fastest and most secure way to receive payments.

Highlights of the CDB:

  • The benefit can be up to $200 per month (or $2,400 per year), depending on your income and that of your spouse or common-law partner.
  • The CDB amount estimator allows you to determine how much you could receive.
  • If you are eligible for the CDB but do not apply right away, you can receive retroactive payments for up to 24 months (starting from July 2025).
  • Apply before the 30th of each month to receive your first CDB payment the following month. Payments will continue as long as you remain eligible for the CDB.
